Choosing the right kit.

Whether choosing to canicross, bike, hike or take part in scent work, the correct kit is key for your dog and yourself. If you've heard the phrase buy once buy right, then it couldnt apply more to the range of sports and activities we offer, that is why we offer use of kit for all activities when you book with us. Read on to find out a few key considerations when buying kit for your activity.

Getting the right kit.

Running Harness

We are incredibly proud to be able to provide kit for use to our clients when they attend classes. Thanks to Non-Stop Dogwear, Sporty Paws and arctic Wolf, our kit bag holds a range of harnesses, belts and lines.

A good harness should have a Y shaped neck and have the base of the 'Y' resting on the dog's sternum ( chest bone) when they lean into the harness. The sides of the harness should not rub too closely to the front leg and reach no further back than the last rib.

Lines / leads

Lines for canicross come in different lengths, including 1mtr, 1.2, 1.5 and 2mtr. You have the options of fully elasticated and with or without grab handles.

A shorter bungee is ideal for dogs who might need to be closer to their handler, or who are strong pullers. A long bungee can provide a smoother run.

For those taking part in bike or scooter - jor, a 2.5 or 3mtr line is ideal in order to keep the dog away from the wheels.

Human belts

There are a range of belts for humans, each one suited for a different activity. Leg straps help hold the belt in place while hiking or running and waist straps keep the pull secure.

A good belt is essential as a poorly fitting one can change the way you run which in turn could lead to injury.

Belts can come in a range of sizes to suit all shapes and needs.

Scentwork equipment

Simple things for scentwork include: A harness ( ideally a different one than your canicross one due to the association the dog has with pulling)

A long line - these come in different lengths, but a good 10mtr line is a great starter.

If working at home on scent finding / searching - you don't even need a harness.
