Can any dog do canicross?

One of the biggest misconceptions about canicross is that it is only for energetic working breeds such as Huskies, Pointers or German Shorthaired Pointers. While these breeds are often associated with dog-powered sports, the reality is that canicross can be enjoyed by a wide variety of dogs.

Can my dog do canicross?

The question is not necessarily what breed your dog is, but whether they are physically healthy, enjoy being active and are comfortable running alongside you.

Canicross is all about building a partnership between you and your dog. Every dog is an individual, and what works for one may not be right for another.

Looking Beyond Breed

Many people are surprised to learn that dogs of all shapes and sizes take part in canicross. From Spaniels and Labradors to mixed breeds and smaller dogs, there is no single “perfect” canicross dog.

While some dogs naturally enjoy running and pulling, others may need more time to build confidence and develop the skills required. What’s important is understanding your dog’s personality, motivation and physical capabilities rather than focusing solely on breed stereotypes.

A dog that enjoys exploring outdoors, is keen to move forward and likes working with their owner often has the potential to enjoy canicross.

Health and Fitness Matter

Before starting canicross, it is important to consider your dog’s overall health and fitness.

Dogs should be free from injuries or conditions that may affect their ability to run comfortably. If your dog has any existing health concerns, or if you are unsure whether running is appropriate, it is always advisable to seek guidance from your veterinary professional.

Fitness should also be developed gradually. Just like people, dogs benefit from building strength, stamina and confidence over time. Starting slowly and progressing at an appropriate pace helps create a positive and enjoyable experience.

Is Age Important?

Age can also play a role in determining whether a dog is ready for canicross.

Young dogs may still be developing physically, while older dogs may require a more tailored approach to training and exercise. However, age alone does not determine suitability. Many mature dogs thrive in canicross when training is adapted to their individual needs and abilities.

The key is to focus on the dog in front of you rather than comparing them to others.

Putting Welfare First

At CANICROSS COACHING, we believe that your dog’s welfare should always come first.

Canicross should be enjoyable, rewarding and safe for both dog and owner. Success is not measured by speed, distance or competition results, but by creating a happy partnership where both members of the team enjoy spending time together outdoors.

Every dog deserves an approach that respects their physical and emotional wellbeing, and good coaching can help ensure that training is tailored to their individual needs.
