Can I race with my dog?

A Guide to Canicross Racing in the UK

One of the questions we're asked most often is:

"Can I race my dog?"

The simple answer is yes!

Whether you've only just started canicross or you've been running for years, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in organised events with your dog. The key is finding the type of race that's right for both of you.

From relaxed fun runs to National Championships, there's something for every team.

Different Types of Races

There are generally two types of events where you can run with your dog:

  • General running events that allow dogs

  • Canicross-specific races

Although both involve running with your dog, they're often organised very differently.

General Running Events That Allow Dogs

Many local trail races, charity events and fun runs now welcome runners with dogs.

These events are designed primarily for runners, with dogs being permitted rather than the main focus.

As a result, the rules can vary considerably between organisers.

Some events may:

  • Allow dogs to run on a collar and hand-held lead.

  • Require dogs to remain on a short lead.

  • Ban full canicross equipment altogether.

  • Limit the number of dogs taking part.

  • Ask runners with dogs to start at the back of the field.

Because these events aren't specifically designed for canicross, the organisers are often trying to balance the needs of all participants.

Our Recommendation

Whilst some dogs are perfectly happy running alongside their owner on a loose lead, we always encourage the use of correctly fitted canicross equipment whenever event rules allow it.

A properly fitted harness, bungee line and waist belt:

  • promotes good dog welfare

  • distributes pulling forces safely

  • allows natural movement

  • reduces stress on the dog's neck

  • improves comfort for both dog and runner

  • helps keep your hands free, improving balance and reducing the risk of falls

Ultimately, the aim is for both you and your dog to enjoy the experience safely.

Are you organising an event and thinking about welcoming runners with dogs?

Canicross Coaching can support race organisers with advice on course design, equipment guidance, race procedures and dog welfare to help develop safe and enjoyable canicross provision.

Canicross-Specific Races

Canicross races are designed specifically for runners and their dogs.

Everything from the start procedures to the timing systems has been developed with dogs in mind.

Because of this, you'll usually find:

  • canicross equipment is encouraged (or required)

  • experienced marshals

  • dog-friendly start procedures

  • welfare checks

  • separate starts from other runners

  • competitors who understand how to run with dogs

Mass and Rolling Starts

Many canicross-friendly races use a mass start or rolling start.

Rather than mixing with runners without dogs, competitors with dogs are given their own dedicated start time.

One important part of race etiquette is self-seeding.

This simply means positioning yourself in the start area according to your expected pace.

If you know your dog is likely to complete the first kilometre in under three minutes, you'll naturally want to be towards the front.

If you're newer to racing or prefer a steadier pace, there's absolutely nothing wrong with starting further back.

Remember, some of the quickest teams can cover the first kilometre in under three minutes, so allowing faster teams to start ahead helps everyone enjoy a safer, smoother race and reduces congestion on narrow trails.

There's no prize for being first to cross the start line!

Individual Start Races

Some organisers use individual start times.

Instead of everyone starting together, each team is allocated a specific start time, for example:

09:05:30

This simply means your race begins at five minutes and thirty seconds past nine.

You'll normally be asked to report to the start area around 7–8 minutes before your allocated time, giving officials enough time to check your race number, timing chip and equipment before you set off.

Most of these events use electronic chip timing.

That means your time starts when you cross the start line—not when the first competitor starts.

So even if you're one of the last teams to leave, you could still record the fastest time of the day.

What Types of Canicross Races Are There?

One of the great things about canicross is the variety of events available.

One-Off Races

Perfect if you'd simply like to give racing a try.

Enter one event, enjoy the experience and decide afterwards whether you'd like to race again.

Club Races

Many regional clubs organise races throughout the season.

For example, Sherwood CaniSports Club hosts several races each year.

You can enter as many or as few as you wish, making them ideal for building confidence and gaining experience.

Race Series

Some organisers run a series of races across the season.

Rather than entering just one event, competitors collect points throughout multiple races to see how they compare over the season.

These are a great way to stay motivated and measure your progress.

Virtual Racing

Not every race has to take place on a start line.

Virtual competitions, such as our Winter League, allow you to run wherever you choose before submitting your times online.

They're ideal for:

  • dogs who are nervous in busy environments

  • dogs who find group starts overwhelming

  • runners building confidence

  • anyone unable to travel regularly

  • people wanting to race against themselves and improve over time

Virtual racing offers all the motivation of competition without the pressure of standing on a busy start line.

Championships

Some organisers refer to their seasonal race series as Championships.

These work in a similar way to a race series, with competitors earning points throughout the season before receiving an overall finishing position.

They provide a fantastic opportunity to compete regularly and follow your progress across multiple events.

British National Championships

The highest level of domestic canicross racing in the UK is the British National Championships, organised by the British Sleddog Sports Federation.

These are the recognised National Championships for British sleddog sports and provide a pathway towards international competition.

Each season includes three National Championship weekends.

Athletes receive a national ranking based on their performances across these championship events, which may form part of the selection process for representing Great Britain at international competitions, subject to the federation's current eligibility and selection criteria.

For many teams, these events represent the pinnacle of UK canicross competition.

Does Speed Matter?

Absolutely not.

One of the best things about canicross is that there really is a place for everyone.

If your goal is simply to enjoy the atmosphere, complete an event and have fun with your dog, you'll find plenty of welcoming races to enter.

Even the National Championships are open and inclusive, provided you meet the entry requirements relating to areas such as your dog's age, experience and your team's capability.

At Canicross Coaching, we work with runners across the entire performance spectrum.

Some of our athletes complete a 5 km event in around 40 minutes, enjoying every step of the journey with their dog.

Others currently rank among the top eight in the world, running sub-18-minute 5 km performances.

Every one of those athletes started somewhere.

Canicross isn't about being the fastest person on the start line.

It's about finding the races that suit you, your dog and your goals.

Whether that's completing your first fun run, joining your local club, working through a race series or dreaming of representing Great Britain, there's a place for every team in our sport.

Ready to Give Racing a Go?

If you're not sure which type of event would suit you and your dog, we'd be delighted to help.

Whether you're preparing for your very first race, looking to build confidence at group starts or working towards championship competition, Canicross Coaching can help you find the right pathway and support you every step of the way.

Because every successful racing partnership starts with a happy, healthy and confident team.
